Translate Locally came out of European research, and the project page says it received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme. It is a desktop app that translates text on your own machine using Marian and Bergamot, and the page describes it as fast and secure translation on your local machine.
Translate Locally scores a 5 on lock-in, a 4 on footprint, self-direction and power and a 3 on longevity and delivery.
Models download over the network and then run locally. The README's examples list models for Czech, German, Estonian, Icelandic, Norwegian, Spanish and English and say more are available from external repositories, so check that your pair exists before you commit. One repository owner holds the code, and the EU grant is the only funding the page mentions.
- Translates text on your own machine with Marian and Bergamot models
- MIT licensed, with funding from a European Union research grant
- Check that your language pair has a model before you commit

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

For comparison, we also reviewed Google Translate (17/30) as a benchmark.
