Governance

Who decides what, and how that could change. Last updated 30 October 2026.

This website is an independent project inspired by Ivan Illich's book, with no connection to his estate or publisher.

Who runs it

One person, Jeff Humble in Berlin, decides what gets reviewed, how it is scored and what is published. This page says how he tries to act as if more people were watching.

Scoring

Every tool gets the same six questions, scored 0 to 5 for a total out of 30, with fixed verdict bands, and the giants we review as benchmarks get the same test. The questions are on how we score. Anyone can propose a change through the get-involved form, and if a question or band changes we will say so and rescore everything together.

Reviews and corrections

Reviews are drafted with the help of AI from public sources and judged against the rubric. Each carries a date, and the scores are our opinion. If you spot a mistake, tell us through the forms on this site, and we will fix factual errors and note any change that moves a score. A maker can ask us to stop using their images but cannot buy or veto a score.

Money

We do not sell listings, reviews, rankings or badges, and the site runs no ads, sets no tracking cookies and uses no analytics. The only income is the optional "Buy us a coffee" tip, which buys no influence and goes toward the domain, hosting and our time. As of 30 October 2026 nothing has come in, and once something does we will publish a short note each year saying roughly what came in and what it paid for. If a link on a page ever earns us money, that page will say so next to the link.

Conflict of interest

The founder also makes small software. Tools he makes are marked Made here and are scored with the same rubric as everything else.

What might change

This project is new and may become a non-profit with a board and a written charter if enough people want to help.
