Most of us have a tab open in a language we read slowly, and Firefox translates it without sending the text anywhere. Translation happens entirely on your device, the language packs are a few megabytes each and download when you first need them, and once installed they work with no internet connection. Mozilla's support page contrasts this with Chrome and Edge, and says they send text to Google or Microsoft servers in the cloud for translation.

Firefox Translations scores a 5 on lock-in, a 4 on footprint, self-direction and longevity and a 3 on power and delivery.

You need Firefox, which is on desktop, on Android from version 126 and on iOS from version 146. It translates text only, a page in several languages may not translate fully since Firefox focuses on the main language, and language availability changes over time, so check your direction on Mozilla's list. Power is a 3 for the same reason Firefox gets one, and our Firefox review has the details.

    What stands out

  • Translates pages entirely on your device
  • Language packs are a few megabytes and work offline once installed
  • Text only, and a page in several languages may not fully translate

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

For comparison, we also reviewed Google Translate (17/30) as a benchmark.
