Hermes Agent comes from Nous Research, a start-up founded in 2023 that also releases open AI models. The agent runs in a terminal or through messaging apps such as Telegram, Signal and Slack, writes reusable skills from the tasks it completes and remembers what it learns about you across sessions. The code is MIT licensed, and it works with Nous's own models, OpenRouter, OpenAI or any endpoint you choose.
Hermes Agent scores a 4 on lock-in and longevity and a 3 on footprint, self-direction, power and delivery.
Nous is a venture-backed company, reported this autumn to be raising $90 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, and it sells optional model plans from $20 to $200 a month. The licence means the community could keep the software going whatever the company does. Like any agent with your logins and a shell, it asks for care.
