Nobody buys a tin of soup without being able to turn it over and read the back, and F-Droid's idea is that apps should have to show theirs. It is an Android app store made by volunteers and funded by donations, and it lists only free and open source apps. It labels each app with anti-features such as Ads, Tracking and Non-Free Network Services, and it hides tracking apps by default, so you can see before you install.

F-Droid scores a 5 on footprint, lock-in and self-direction, a 4 on power and longevity and a 3 on delivery.

The catalogue is smaller than Google Play's and most big names are missing, so Delivery is a 3.

Opening the store gives you a list of apps with their warnings printed on the front, and the ones that track you tucked out of sight until you ask.

    What stands out

  • Only free and open source apps, built from source
  • Warns when an app tracks you or shows ads
  • A smaller catalogue, missing most big names

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

Side by side. F-Droid vs Google Play

For comparison, we also reviewed Google Play (15/30) as a benchmark.
