Wikipedia and other libraries of knowledge, saved to read with no internet.
Instead of Google Search, always-online reference

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a pocket book that knows everything and carries friendly letters on its cover telling you not to panic, and Kiwix is a real-world cousin of it. It is a Swiss non-profit association, founded in 2006 and registered in Lausanne, that lets you download Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg and other collections in a single file and read them anywhere with no connection. It runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
Its funding comes mostly from grants, led by the Wikimedia Foundation, along with donations and paid services for organisations, and it publishes audited accounts. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing watching what you look up, and Kiwix scores a 5 on lock-in, self-direction, power and longevity and a 4 on footprint.
Delivery is a 3 because a download is a snapshot that goes stale, and the biggest collections need a lot of storage.
For a classroom, a long flight or a village with a poor connection, a single file means the knowledge is already on the machine when the signal drops.
- Download Wikipedia and other libraries as a single file to read offline
- Run by a Swiss non-profit that publishes audited accounts
- A download is a snapshot, so it goes stale

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.
For dark backgrounds, use kiwix-dark.svg in place of kiwix-light.svg.
For comparison, we also reviewed Google Search (16/30) as a benchmark.
