InvokeAI is for people who want to work on an image and not wire up a pipeline. It has a unified canvas for inpainting and outpainting, a gallery, and node workflows when you need them, all served from a local web page on your own machine. The code is Apache-2.0.

InvokeAI scores a 4 on lock-in, self-direction, power and delivery, a 3 on longevity and a 2 on footprint.

A seed round in 2023 backed a company around it, and by mid-2026 a release note described the corporate backer as having exited, with a large release built by more than thirty unpaid volunteers. The software still works and the licence protects you, but nobody can say how quickly it will keep up with new models. A few supported models, such as GPT Image, are API only and need a network connection.

    What stands out

  • A canvas, a gallery and node workflows in a local web app
  • Apache-2.0 code, so you can use and build on it freely
  • Its corporate backer has exited and recent releases come from volunteers

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

For comparison, we also reviewed Adobe Firefly (15/30) and Midjourney (14/30) as a benchmark.
