The story of Firefox starts with Netscape, and in 1998 Netscape released its browser's code to the public. Today Firefox is open source and made by Mozilla, a nonprofit foundation, on an engine of its own, so the web does not run on a single browser engine. It syncs, it has strong privacy settings, and it works with nearly every site, on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.

Firefox scores a 5 on longevity and delivery, a 4 on lock-in and self-direction and a 3 on footprint and power. Delivery is a 5.

Mozilla's browser business is a for-profit subsidiary of a nonprofit foundation, and according to Wikipedia Google paid about $585 million of Mozilla's $680 million revenue in 2024, so we left a 3 on Power for that tension.

Check the current privacy settings after you install it, since defaults change. Scores are our reading of public sources.

    What stands out

  • Open source, made by a nonprofit foundation
  • Runs on its own engine, so the web does not depend on one browser
  • About 86% of Mozilla's 2024 revenue came from Google
