Posteo is an independent email service in Berlin. A base mailbox costs 1 euro a month with 4 GB of storage, and the company says it has no ad partners, no tracking and no user profiling, and uses 100% green energy. It works with any mail app through IMAP and POP3, so you can leave when you want.
Posteo scores a 4 on lock-in, self-direction, longevity and delivery and a 3 on footprint and power.
You pay for it, and we could not confirm whether its software is open source. Its privacy claims come from the company itself.
