Think of a doorman who checks every visitor against a list of known pests before they reach the house. Pi-hole answers your home network's name lookups and refuses the ones that lead to known ad and tracking servers, so every device on the network benefits without installing anything. It runs on a small server or a router.

Pi-hole scores a 5 on lock-in, self-direction and longevity, a 4 on footprint and power and a 3 on delivery.

It can break some sites and needs a small always-on computer, so Delivery is a 3.

Once it is running, the ads stop arriving on every device in the house, including the ones that cannot run an ad blocker.

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

For comparison, we also reviewed Amazon Alexa (14/30) as a benchmark.
