Anyone who has watched a phone map give up in a tunnel, a valley or a country with no data plan has wished for the road atlas that used to live in the glovebox. CoMaps is that atlas for a phone: you download a region once and then maps and navigation work offline, built on OpenStreetMap, with no account and no tracking. It runs on Android, iOS and Linux, and it exists because its contributors forked Organic Maps in 2025 over concerns about governance, transparency and shareholder profit.

Since the fork they have removed the Kayak affiliate links and the Google Firebase code, rewritten the map server so it collects nothing, and made it possible to host the map files yourself. It scores a 5 on footprint, lock-in, power and longevity and a 4 on self-direction.

The price is the one you would expect from an offline map. It cannot match Google on live traffic or on business listings, so on a day when you want to check a road for jams or find a particular shop by name, CoMaps will leave you guessing, and Delivery is a 3.

Owning it means a region of the map sitting on your phone, ready when the signal drops, with the option to host the map files yourself if you ever want to.

    What stands out

  • Offline maps and navigation on OpenStreetMap, with no account and no tracking
  • A community fork that removed affiliate links and Google Firebase code
  • You can host the map files yourself
