Most of us have a document somewhere that no program we own can open any more. LibreOffice writes, calculates and presents, and it saves in the open ODF format that any other program can read. The Document Foundation, a nonprofit, looks after it, it is free, and it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.
LibreOffice scores a 5 on lock-in and longevity, a 4 on self-direction, power and delivery and a 3 on footprint.
It opens Microsoft files, though complex layouts can shift, and the interface looks older than Word's, so Delivery is a 4.
A letter written in it today is a file that other programs can read, whichever office suite you end up using.
- Documents, spreadsheets and slides in one free suite
- Saves in the open ODF format
- Complex Microsoft files can shift
